Harvesting Images In Tuscany: Siena, Florence & Tenuta di Spannocchia
During my summer 2019 artist residency in Italy, I worked with pastel on paper as my primary medium. This was very much out of my comfort zone as I forced myself to work small revealing as much information I could about my subject within a limited space. I also limited my palette, focusing on the local, natural Tuscan colors. Through this practice, I achieved wonderful results, colorful stories to document my experience and sense of place. In addition to the pastel drawings, I also included a bit of watercolor, collage, photography, and charcoal.
My goal as an artist in residency was to gather information and just make art throughout my trip for an upcoming group show but of course, art practice teaches us so much more than our expectations. I look forward to using more pastel to create drawings.
2018 Schoodic Institute:
I spent 10 days in Acadia National Park at the Schoodic Institute exploring experimental drawing from nature while learning about the history of Acadia and the Wabanaki Nations. Acadia is a spiritual, magical place where the mountains meet the sea. Nature is abundant and in the morning it was a common occurance to be greeted outside my cabin by a friendly Horshoe Hare. It quickly became one of my favorite places in Maine.
